Basketball Recap: Leo Hawkinson's Big Game Can't Quite Lead La Jolla over Madison

La Jolla was the 62-49 winner over Madison when they last played one another back in February of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The La Jolla Vikings fell to the Madison Warhawks 57-52. While losing is never fun, the Vikings can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 409th, while the Warhawks are ranked 204th).

Several Vikings players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Leo Hawkinson, who posted 22 points. Brody Sessa was another key player, putting up seven points in addition to five boards and three steals.

Madison's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Runnar(Rj) Miller led the charge by dropping a double-double on 16 points and 12 rebounds. Miller's evening made it five games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Eli Stevens, who went 7 for 12 en route to 18 points and six boards.

La Jolla is on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 14-6. As for Madison, the win (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 15-6.

La Jolla didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 58-57 victory against Coronado on the 24th. As for Madison, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 63-62 win against Point Loma on the 24th.
