Recap: Cherokee Indians vs. Phillips Bears
In what's become a running theme this season, Cherokee gave their fans yet another huge victory on Tuesday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Phillips Bears an 11-0 shutout. The win made it back-to-back victories for Cherokee.
Carli Sparks made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and only one hit while striking out seven over five innings pitched. Sparks was also stellar in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with a home run, three RBI, and two runs. She is on a roll when it comes to home runs, as she's now launched at least one in the last three games she's played.
In other batting news, A?kaiya Spencer and Destiny Trevino did most of the damage at the plate: Spencer went 1-for-2 with a home run, three RBI, and two runs, while Trevino went 2-for-2 with a home run, two runs, and two RBI. Lazaria Mason was another key contributor, scoring a run while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances.
Cherokee's win bumped their record up to 14-7. As for Phillips, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-12.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Cherokee will face off against Waterloo at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Waterloo is on a five-game streak of home wins, Cherokee a four-game streak of away wins (dating back to last season)-- so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the field. As for Phillips, they will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Hubbertville at 4:30 p.m. on April 1st.
