Baseball Game Preview: Whitewater Whippets vs. Delavan-Darien Comets

For the second straight game, Whitewater will face off against Delavan-Darien. The Whippets will venture away from home to square off against the Comets at 4:45 p.m. on Thursday. Whitewater has given up an average of 9.9 runs per game this season, but Thursday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Tuesday just wasn't the day for Whitewater's offense. They lost 13-0 to Delavan-Darien on Tuesday. The Whippets have struggled against the Comets recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive lost meeting.

For Delavan-Darien's part, Joel Janssen made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out eight over four innings pitched. Janssen also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Delavan-Darien is 3-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 2-3-1 otherwise. Janssen was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double.

In other pitching news, Evan Doerksen looked comfortable as he tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits.

Back at the plate, Jacob Huff and Kevin O'Grady did most of the damage at the plate: Huff went 2-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and two doubles, while O'Grady got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. Those two doubles gave Huff a new career-high. Haaken Hovestol also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

Delavan-Darien has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-4-1 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games. As for Whitewater, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-7.
