Softball Recap: Stafford Wins Going Away Against La Marque

Stafford never got on the board in their matchup last Friday, but that sure wasn't the case in their game against La Marque on Tuesday. They were the clear victors by an 18-3 margin over the Cougars. Considering the Spartans have won nine games by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Jovaughna Mendez was a major factor no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out nine over seven innings pitched. Mendez was also solid in the batter's box, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-5.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Noehli Torres, who fired off four stolen bases, three triples, and three runs while going 4-for-5. Those four stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Kaelyn Whitaker was another key player, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 4-for-4.

Stafford kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 19 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 3.9 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 contests they've averaged 9.6.

Stafford is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matches. That's provided a massive bump to their 11-7-1 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games. As for La Marque, they dropped their record down to 6-16 with the defeat, which was their fourth straight at home.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Stafford is set to challenge their familiar foe Almeta Crawford at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, La Marque will square off against rival Fort Bend Willowridge at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
