Baseball Game Recap: South Hunterdon Eagles vs. Vernon Vikings

South Hunterdon extended their losing streak to four on Saturday, dropping them down to 4-4. They might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 11-1 to the Vernon Vikings, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Vikings this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 11-1 on Saturday.

As for Vernon, their victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 5-2. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.7 runs on average over those games.

For Vernon's part, Matt Rugel made a big impact no matter where he played. He struck out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). Those six strikeouts gave Rugel a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

In other pitching news, Joe Esposito looked comfortable as he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits.

Back at the plate, Tyler Dobrzynski was incredible, going 4-for-5 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most runs he has posted since back in May of 2025. Gavin Bruno was another key player, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with one triple, two RBI, and one run.

Looking ahead, South Hunterdon will square off against West Windsor-Plainsboro North at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Vernon, they will face off against Jefferson Township at 4:00 p.m. on Monday.
