Despite scoring seven points in the third, the Dons still trailed by 21 points going into the fourth quarter. But 34 points in the fourth helped Santa Barbara pull out the victory.
SB was able to dig itself out of a 28-point hole en route to the defeat of the Spartans.
The victory avenged Santa Barbara's close 16-13 loss to Rio Mesa last season.
The victory was a step in the right direction for the Dons, who were coming off a 35-7 defeat at the hands of Atascadero in its previous game. The loss was the third in a row for RM.
Santa Barbara (2-2) will play a non-conference game against Centennial next week, while Rio Mesa (0-3) will take on Dos Pueblos also in a non-conference game.
