Baseball Recap: Woodlawn Comes Up Short

For some reason, the away team has come away with the win the last five times Woodlawn and Fairfield have met, but the home crowd finally got their W on Tuesday. Woodlawn came up short against Fairfield, falling 22-12. Even if the Colonels couldn't come away with the win, the high-scoring effort was a great turnaround for their hitters, which had struggled int the games prior.

Fernandez Sturdivant was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. On the mound, he struck out nine batters over 4.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and six unearned) runs off four hits. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in March of 2024. He was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing two bases while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. He also hit a double, marking his first of the season.

In other batting news, Roderick Jones made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4. Those three hits gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Eric Rogers, who scored two runs and stole two bases while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances.

Woodlawn dropped their record down to 3-10 with the loss, which was their eighth straight on the road dating back to last season. As for Fairfield, the victory got them back to even at 7-7.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Woodlawn will square off against Jackson-Olin on Monday. As for Fairfield, they will face off against Holt at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
