Softball Recap: Martins Ferry's Winning Streak Snapped at Five Games

Martins Ferry has relied on a stalwart pitcher averaging four runs allowed per game, but that average took a hit on Monday. They took a 10-6 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Weir Red Riders. The Purple Riders' defeat signaled the end of their five-game winning streak.

Maddie Lucas spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered six earned (and four unearned) runs on 11 hits and racked up eight Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Abbey Snedeker stepped up to lead a balanced group of hitters: she went 3-for-4 with one home run and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Giana Chirpas, who went 3-for-5 with one home run and two RBI.

Martins Ferry's loss dropped their record down to 22-4. As for Weir, they are on a roll lately: they've won 14 of their last 16 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 24-6 record this season.

Martins Ferry will take on Claymont in a tournament on Wednesday. As for Weir, they will take on Grafton at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. The Bearcats will roll in looking for their sixth straight victory, something the Red Riders surely won't give up without a fight.
