Basketball Recap: Saturday's Loss Ends Smithville's Winning Streak

If Smithville was feeling good fresh off their 49-22 takedown of Hillsdale last Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Smithville Smithies fell 55-44 to the Norwayne Bobcats on Saturday. The Smithies were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Bobcats earlier this season, when they won 53-44.

Norwayne's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Hannah Froelich led the charge by dropping a double-double on 14 points and 18 boards. Froelich has been hot, having posted eight or more rebounds the last six times she's played. Ava Maibach was another key player, going 7 of 13 on her way to 16 points in addition to six assists and five boards.

The defeat snapped Smithville's winning streak at four games and leaves them with a 17-3 record. As for Norwayne, the victory was the ninth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 15-3.

Smithville and Norwayne should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Ohio Rankings. Smithville (ranked 115th) will meet Waynedale (ranked 345th) at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Similarly, Norwayne will face off against West Holmes at 7:15 p.m. on Monday up 180 places (171 vs. 351).
