Baseball Recap: Wheeling Park Takes a Loss

Wheeling Park had lost three straight at home, but on Saturday they dropped their record down to 12-7 to make it four. They fell just short of the Jefferson Cougars by a score of 3-1. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Patriots of the 5-0 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in June of 2016.

As for Jefferson, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won ten of their last 11 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 18-2 record this season. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory they have posted since April 5th.

For Jefferson's part, Andrew Engle spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on two hits.

On the hitting side, Jefferson's win was truly a team effort as five different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Nayan Dominguez, who went 1-for-2 with one run.

Looking ahead, Wheeling Park will welcome Buckhannon-Upshur at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for Jefferson, they will look to defend their home field on Monday against Hedgesville at 6:00 p.m. The Cougars' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Eagles have averaged an impressive 7.8 runs per game this season.
