The Fernley Vaqueros will take on the Foothill Cougars in a tournament on Saturday. Fernley is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.5 runs per game this season.
Fernley's tournament run continued when they took on Red Bluff on Friday. The Vaqueros came out on top against the Spartans by a score of 8-3.

The team relied heavily on Taylor Tollestrup, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with four stolen bases, four runs, and four RBI. Those four stolen bases gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Ximena Rodriguez, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Foothill challenged University Prep on Friday. The Cougars came out on top in a nail-biter against the Panthers, sneaking past 7-6. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Cougars have posted since March 25th.
Elisea Wiegand was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up five earned (and one unearned) runs off seven hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 13 consecutive appearances. She was even better at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and one triple.
In other batting news, Rylee Vakulich was excellent, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one double. Another player making a difference was Sophie Hooks, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI.
Foothill kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 12 hits in three consecutive matchups.
Fernley is on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last ten games. That's provided a nice bump to their 18-7 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.8 runs over those games. As for Foothill, their record is now 15-4-1.
Both Fernley and Foothill just can't seem to miss. The Vaqueros have been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.2 hits per game. However, it's not like Foothill struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 4.8 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Fernley suffered a grim 13-0 defeat to Foothill in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can the Vaqueros avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
