Softball Game Preview: Berkeley Yellowjackets vs. San Leandro Pirates

The Berkeley Yellowjackets will head out on the road to take on the San Leandro Pirates at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Berkeley will be strutting in after a victory while San Leandro will be coming in after a loss.

Berkeley barely beat Mt. Eden the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Yellowjackets were the clear victors by an 11-1 margin over the Monarchs on Wednesday. The win was some much needed relief for the Yellowjackets as it spelled an end to their seven-game losing streak.

Olive Lightfoot tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out eight over 4.1 innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on June Shaller, who went 2-for-4 with four RBI, one triple, and one run. Those four RBI gave her a new career-high. Riley Pritchard was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

Berkeley hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Mt. Eden struck out eight times.

Meanwhile, San Leandro came up short against Arroyo on Wednesday and fell 7-4.

Berkeley's record is now 8-14. As for San Leandro, their defeat was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 7-1 and their overall record down to 18-5.
