Baseball Recap: Clayton Comes Up Short

Clayton was the 3-2 winner over Garner when they last played one another last Tuesday, but their luck changed this time around. Clayton fell just short of Garner by a score of 6-5 on Friday. The Comets' defeat signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.

Jennings Dunlap put in work no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing four innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. He also tossed a walk, which is notable because Clayton is 2-1 when he allows at most one walk, but 4-5 otherwise. Dunlap was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 1-for-3.

In other batting news, Cam Bryant made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-4. He has become a key player for Clayton: the team is 2-1 when he posts at least two stolen bases, but 4-5 otherwise. Parker Kilpatrick was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.

Clayton's loss dropped their record down to 6-6. As for Garner, their win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-6.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Clayton will challenge Cleveland at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Garner, they will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against Fuquay - Varina at 7:00 p.m. on April 8. Fuquay - Varina's pitching crew has only allowed 3.2 runs per game this season, so Garner's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
