Basketball Recap: Aguilar Sets Scoring Season-High Against Walsenburg

Aguilar is still winless after their contest against Walsenburg on Friday, but the team can take solace in the fact it was the closest they've come to winning. They were three points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 54-51 heartbreaker at the hands of the Walsenburg Panthers. One positive for the Wildcats, at least, is that this was the most points they've scored all season.

Aguilar lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Matthew Gonzales, who dropped a double-double with 18 points and 14 boards. That was a full 35.3% of Aguilar's points, marking the fourth time in a row Gonzales has posted more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jaxon Salapich, who dropped a double-double with 14 points and 18 rebounds.

Even though they lost, Aguilar smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in four consecutive matches.

Walsenburg's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Landon Eccher, who dropped a double-double with 24 points and 12 boards. Those 12 rebounds gave Eccher a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Adrian Vallejos, who almost dropped a double-double with 15 points and nine boards.

Aguilar's defeat dropped their record down to 0-8. As for Walsenburg, their victory ended a six-game drought on the road and puts them at 3-16.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Aguilar will host Hanover at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hanover is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 50.4 points per game this season. As for Walsenburg, they will take on Sierra at 4:30 p.m. on February 21st.
