High schools from the states of California, Georgia, Michigan, New Jersey, New York and Texas produced 18 players taken Thursday night in the NBA Draft – more than all 44 other states combined.
It was a big night for Georgia with Jaylen Brown of
Wheeler (Marietta) going No. 3 overall to the Celtics, Malik Beasley of
St. Francis (Alpharetta) going No. 19 to Denver and Malcolm Brogdon of
Greater Atlanta Christian (Norcross) at No. 36 to Milwaukee.
Georgia is tied for producing the most
No. 1 overall picks in the last 20 years.
California was represented by No. 8 pick Marquese Chriss of
Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove), Daniel Hamilton of (
St. John Bosco (Bellflower) at No. 56 and Tyrone Wallace of
Bakersfield with the 60th and final pick of the draft.
Texas was headed by
Warren (San Antonio) graduate Taurean Prince at No. 12,
God's Academy (Lake Dallas) product Pascal Siakam at No. 27 and Joel Bolomboy of
Keller Central at No. 52.

California and Texas tied for the most player picked in 2015 with five.
After not producing a single player in 2015, Michigan saw three come off the board Thursday night. Michigan State's Denzel Valentine, a graduate of
Sexton (Lansing), was nabbed by the Chicago Bulls at No. 14. Deyonta Davis of
Muskegon and Kay Felder of
Pershing (Detroit) were both taken in the second round.
New Jersey led the draft with three players selected in the first round alone. St. Joseph's Wade Baldwin IV of
St. Joseph (Metuchen) was taken at No. 17 while Deandre Bembry
Patrick School (Elizabeth) and Malachi Richardson of
Trenton Catholic Academy went back-to-back at Nos. 21 and 22.
New York caught fire and produced three picks in the second round. Cheick Diallo, a native of Mali who attended
Our Savior New American (Centereach) was selected at No. 33.
Lincoln (Brooklyn) saw Isaiah Whitehead taken off the board at No. 42 and Isaiah Cousins of
Mt. Vernon was taken at No. 59 overall.
Illinois, Maryland, Virginia and Wisconsin each produced two draft picks.
