Baseball Recap: Valmeyer Comes Up Short

Valmeyer had lost five straight on the road, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 6-15 to make it six. They fell 8-3 to the Gibault Catholic Hawks. The Pirates were not able to make up for their defeat to the Hawks from their previous meeting back in May of 2024.

Landon Roy was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

As for Gibault Catholic, their win bumped their record up to 6-13. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last four times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

On Gibault Catholic's side, Dante Gianino spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on six hits and racked up seven Ks. Gianino has become a key player for the Hawks: the team is undefeated when he allows at most three earned runs, but 3-13 otherwise.

At the plate, Gibault Catholic's victory was truly a team effort as four different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Robert Pierpoint, who went 1-for-4 with two RBI and one run. That's the most RBI Pierpoint has posted since back in May of 2024. Another was Kole Schilling, who went 1-for-3 with two runs.

Coming up, Valmeyer will head out to take on Dupo at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Pirates are facing the Tigers at the right time seeing as the Tigers are stuck on an 11-game losing streak. As for Gibault Catholic, they will challenge Pinckneyville at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Hawks' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Panthers have averaged an impressive 6.8 runs per game this season.
