Basketball Recap: Dariana Luna's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Mcallen over Mcallen Memorial

McAllen was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fourth straight loss. They fell 39-30 to the McAllen Memorial Mustangs. The Bulldogs were not able to make up for their defeat to the Mustangs from their previous meeting back in January of 2024.

McAllen's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Dariana Luna, who posted 13 points along with eight rebounds and five steals. Luna has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last three times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Miller Richey, who had seven points and 21 rebounds.

Even though they lost, McAllen smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 20 offensive boards. That's the most offensive rebounds they've posted since back in February of 2024.

McAllen Memorial's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Mj Banjao, who earned 13 points along with six rebounds and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Arissa Garcia, who put up nine points in addition to eight boards and four steals.

McAllen's record now sits at 14-12. As for McAllen Memorial, their record is now 20-9.

Coincidentally, the two teams will both be playing Sharyland the next time they take the court. McAllen Memorial will host Sharyland at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, while McAllen will host them at 6:00 p.m. on January 10th.
