Baseball Recap: Springfield Takes a Loss

Springfield extended their losing streak to five on Monday, dropping their season record down to 2-11 in the process. They fell 6-1 to the Garnet Valley Jaguars. The Cougars were not able to make up for their loss to the Jaguars from their previous meeting back in April of 2024.

Springfield got a good showing from Denny Monastra, who pitched four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. Monastra has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Springfield saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Shane McCaffery, who went 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI. That double was McCaffery's first of the season.

As for Garnet Valley, their win ended a four-game drought on the road and puts them at 8-7. The game was the first time they have beaten Springfield on their field since April 16, 2019.

On Garnet Valley's side, Ryan McGhee spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on seven hits and racked up six Ks.

On the hitting side, Garnet Valley got a big performance out of Joe Anzalone, who went 2-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. Harrison Maull was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two stolen bases and two RBI.

We've got plenty of inter-conference action coming up soon. Springfield is set to challenge their familiar foe Marple Newtown at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Garnet Valley will square off against rival Haverford at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Both teams are headed into the matchup with plenty of momentum (the Jaguars have won three straight at home, while the Fords won four straight on the road), something that'll have to change.
