Basketball Recap: Phillips' Win on Friday Extends Winning Streak to Five

Phillips had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 15 points) and they went ahead and made it five on Friday. They walked away with a 56-43 victory over the Hammond Central Wolves.

Phillips got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Dajia Cohen out in front who went 8 for 16 on her way to 20 points and five rebounds. Nakiyah Williams was another key player, putting up 13 points and six assists.

Phillips was working as a unit and finished the game with 12 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Hammond Central only racked up five assists.

Hammond Central's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Ciyah Thomas, who dropped a double-double on 21 points and ten steals. Thomas is crushing it when it comes to steals: she's grabbed at least three every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Indiah Hutchinson, who posted 13 points in addition to seven boards and four steals.

Phillips is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight matches, which provided a nice bump to their 11-5 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 55.6 points per game. As for Hammond Central, their defeat dropped their record down to 9-2.

Phillips will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on University Prep at 4:30 p.m. on January 4, 2025. As for Hammond Central, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 49-46 win against Valparaiso on the 21st.
