Warriors take top spot after winning Class 4A state championship.

The high school football season in North Carolina came to a close over the weekend of Nov. 24-25 with the crowning of new state champions. Weddington (Matthews) was among the winners, beating No. 6 Hoggard (Wilmington) in the Class 4A state championship game. That victory helped propel the Warriors to the No. 1 ranking in the final MaxPreps North Carolina Top 25.

With its 56-21 win over Hoggard, Weddington (14-2) won its fourth state football championship, all in the last eight seasons. State championship Offensive MVP Tyler Budge completed 17 of 24 passes for 243 yards and a couple of touchdowns to lead the Warrior scoring explosion.

Providence Day (Charlotte) finished at No. 3 after upending No. 2 Rabun Gap-Nacoochee (Rabun Gap, Ga.) 34-27 in the NCISAA Division I state championship game. This was the second meeting between the two schools this season, with Rabun Gap-Nacoochee winning the first contest 42-27 in October.
