Basketball Recap: Volcano Vista Sets Scoring Season-High Against Rio Grande

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Volcano Vista). They simply couldn't be stopped on Monday as they easily beat the Rio Grande Ravens 70-40. Given the Hawks' advantage in MaxPreps' New Mexico basketball rankings (they are ranked 12th, while the Ravens are ranked 105th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Volcano Vista's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Zoey Loretto, who went 7 of 11 en route to 15 points in addition to five rebounds and three steals. Mia Zuniga was another key player, going 6 for 14 on her way to 17 points and five boards.

Rio Grande's loss came despite strong showings from Sophia L?pez and Riley Starks. L?pez posted 19 points along with seven rebounds and three steals, while Starks put up 12 points. L?pez is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last six games she's played.

Volcano Vista is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five contests, which provided a nice bump to their 11-8 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 50.6 points per game. As for Rio Grande, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 2-18.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Volcano Vista will square off against Cibola at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Volcano Vista is facing Cibola at the right time seeing as Cibola is stuck on a five-game losing streak. As for Rio Grande, they won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Los Lunas at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
