Basketball Recap: St. Mary's Comes Up Short

St. Mary played a tough matchup on Wednesday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They were outmatched by the Mesquite Wildcats and fell 104-20. The loss continues a trend for the Knights in their matchups with the Wildcats: they've now lost eight in a row.

Gwen Carter was St. Mary's leading scorer, having posted 11 points.

It was another big night for Navae Guidry, who went 12 for 17 on her way to 29 points along with eight rebounds and five steals for Mesquite. Guidry's evening made it four games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points. Kahlia Gonzales was another key player, going 5 of 8 en route to 16 points in addition to eight steals and six assists.

St. Mary's defeat was their first in the region, dropping their region record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 3-7. As for Mesquite, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 16-1.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. St. Mary's has already played their next contest (against Arcadia), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Mesquite is taking a road trip to take on Westview at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Mesquite is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 71.3 points per game this season.
