Basketball Recap: Jefferson Academy Comes Up Short

Jefferson Academy easily dispatched Pomona last Tuesday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Jefferson Academy Jaguars fell just short of the Kent Denver Sun Devils by a score of 35-33 on Thursday. The defeat continues a trend for the Jaguars in their matchups with the Sun Devils: they've now lost five in a row.

When it comes to explaining why Jefferson Academy lost, don't look at Elsa Nygren. Despite the final result, she posted six points and 13 boards. That's the most rebounds Nygren has posted since back in February of 2024.

Even though they lost, Jefferson Academy smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive rebounds in five consecutive matchups.

Kent Denver's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Kara Fitzpatrick led the charge by putting up 12 points and five boards. Fitzpatrick continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Austin Duncan was another key player, posting eight points along with 11 rebounds and five steals.

Jefferson Academy's loss dropped their record down to 7-3. As for Kent Denver, their victory bumped their record up to 5-9.

Jefferson Academy didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 60-17 win against Stargate School on the 21st. Kent Denver has also already played their next contest, a 70-41 victory against Eagle Ridge Academy on the 21st.
