Baseball Recap: Fairmont Comes Up Short

Fairmont had lost five straight at home, but on Monday they dropped down to 7-9 to make it six. They came up short against the Northmont Thunderbolts, falling 12-1. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Firebirds of the 5-4 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2025.

As for Northmont, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-7 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.0 runs over those games.

For Northmont's part, Brady Whittaker made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits (and only one walk). That's the most strikeouts Whittaker has posted since April 3rd. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with one run and one RBI.

In other batting news, Drake Sauber was incredible, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with three stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. He has become a key player for Northmont: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 5-7 otherwise. Austin Welch was another key player, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with three runs and one stolen base.

While Fairmont had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.
