Pittston is 8-2 against Hazleton Area since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Patriots will venture away from home to challenge the Cougars at 4:15 p.m. Pittston is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.
Lake-Lehman hit Pittston with a six-run sixth inning on Friday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Patriots fell just short of the Knights by a score of 11-10. While the Patriots didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Knights 5-0 in the first period.
Gabby Gorzkowski made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. The team also got some help courtesy of Jillian Haas, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles, one run, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, after a string of four wins, Hazleton Area's good fortune finally ran out on Saturday. They came up short against Liberty, falling 13-0. The game marked the first time this season in which the Cougars were not able to get on the board.
Hazleton Area saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Nanci Major, who went 1-for-2 with one double.
Hazleton Area's loss dropped their record down to 5-2. As for Pittston, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-4 record this season.
Hazleton Area's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Pittston has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.1 hits per game. It's a different story for Hazleton Area, though, as they've been averaging 11.3 hits. Given Pittston's sizable advantage in that area, the Cougars will need to find a way to close that gap.
Pittston took their victory against Hazleton Area in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 10-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Patriots since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
