Chugiak hasn't had much luck against South Anchorage recently, but that could start to change on Saturday. The Mustangs will be playing at home against the Wolverines at 11:00 a.m. Chugiak is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.5 runs per game this season.
Chugiak is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Alaska's top teams: Bettye Davis East Anchorage, who was ranked 17th at the time (Chugiak was ranked 15th). The Mustangs' pitchers stepped up to hand the Thunderbirds a 16-0 shutout on Thursday. The Mustangs haven't had any issues with the Thunderbirds recently, as the game was their ninth consecutive win against them.

Owen Dockstader was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits (and not a single walk). Those six strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI.
In other batting news, Blake Yawit was a standout: he went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Luke Salle, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with four runs and two stolen bases.
Chugiak kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are 2-1 when they post 11 or more hits.
Meanwhile, South Anchorage beat Dimond 7-4 on Thursday.
Carson Lake tossed a big game, tossing 5.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Chase Mascelli, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Logan HuLquist was another key player, earning one RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.
South Anchorage's victory bumped their record up to 14-1. As for Chugiak, their win bumped their record up to 4-7.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. Chugiak has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.1 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like South Anchorage struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3.7 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
