Basketball Recap: Covenant Life Proves Higher State Rank Is No Mistake

Covenant Life won the last time they faced Rockbridge Academy and things went their way on Friday too. The Covenant Life Cougars enjoyed a cozy 49-33 victory over the Rockbridge Academy Scots. Given the Cougars' advantage in MaxPreps' Maryland basketball rankings (they are ranked 104th, while the Scots are ranked 225th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Daniel Melendez was his usual excellent self, going 6 for 11 on his way to 16 points along with eight steals and six assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Elijah Hughes, who posted 16 points.

They weren't the only one working in the assists department: Covenant Life was working as a unit and finished the game with 19 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Covenant Life has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matches, which provided a nice bump to their 8-4 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 58.0 points per game. As for Rockbridge Academy, they have been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six games, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-9 record this season.

Covenant Life will venture away from home to take on Living Grace Christian at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Living Grace Christian knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past six contests -- so hopefully Covenant Life likes a good challenge. Rockbridge Academy has already played their next match (against Greater Grace Christian Academy), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
