Softball Recap: Surry County Wins Going Away Against Brunswick

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Cumberland, Surry County was happy to have turned things around on Thursday. They were the clear victors by a 16-3 margin over the Brunswick Bulldogs. With that victory, the Cougars brought their scoring average up to 7 runs per game.

Whitney Griffin made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits (and only one walk). Griffin was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one triple. That triple marked the first that she has hit this season.

In other batting news, Surry County let Hailey Livesay and Adalynn Swanner run wild. Livesay got on base in three of her four plate appearances with three stolen bases, three runs, and one double, while Swanner got on base in all four of her plate appearances with four runs and two stolen bases. That double was Livesay's first of the season. Sofia Flores was another key player, going 1-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

With the win, Surry County broke their three-game losing streak and moved their record to 2-5. As for Brunswick, they dropped their record down to 0-5-1 with the loss, which was their seventh straight on the road dating back to last season.

Coming up, Surry County will host Tidewater Academy at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The Cougars are facing the Warriors at the right time seeing as the Warriors are stuck on a four-game losing streak. As for Brunswick, they will square off against Franklin at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
