Basketball Recap: Laurens Takes Loss Despite Strong Efforts from Nyri Allen and Zoe Young

The Laurens Raiders lost 57-36 to the Wren Hurricanes on Thursday.

Laurens' defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Zoe Young, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 14 boards, and Nyri Allen, who went 8 of 19 on her way to 19 points and three steals. Young has been hot for a while, having posted eight or more boards the last 16 times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Alayiah Carter, who posted three points.

Even though they lost, Laurens smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 20 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in 18 consecutive contests dating back to last season.

Wren's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Keyana West led the charge by putting up 14 points and eight rebounds. Another player making a difference was Lydia Wedgewood, who had five points in addition to six rebounds and four blocks.

Laurens' loss was their sixth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 5-9. As for Wren, their victory bumped their record up to 11-5.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Laurens will host Westside at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Wren, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Southside at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Wren is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 53.1 points per game this season.
