Softball Recap: McClain Comes Up Short

McClain dropped their record down to 6-9 on Monday, which also ended the team's three-game streak of wins. They lost 16-0 to the Hillsboro Indians. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Tigers of the 11-0 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2024.

As for Hillsboro, their victory was their seventh straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 15-3. The result was nothing new for the Indians, who have now won ten games by seven runs or more so far this season.

For Hillsboro's part, Camryn Spruell was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 15 over five innings pitched. Spruell has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one home run and four RBI.

In other batting news, Madison Dearmon and Merideth Dietrick did most of the damage at the plate: Dearmon went 1-for-2 with one home run and four RBI, while Dietrick went a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs and one stolen base. Those four hits gave Dietrick a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Choe Roberts, who went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

While McClain had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
