Preview: Mathis Pirates vs. Goliad Tigers
The Mathis Pirates will be playing in front of their home fans against the Goliad Tigers at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Both teams come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Mathis was handed a 50-point loss in their previous outing, but they didn't let that bad energy affect their game against Taft on Tuesday. Mathis had just enough and edged Taft out 54-51. The victory was just what Mathis needed coming off of a 100-50 defeat in their prior matchup.
Ashton Quesada continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, scoring 21 points along with five rebounds and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Arik Cuellar, who scored 17 points along with six rebounds and two steals.
Meanwhile, Goliad scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Tuesday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat George West 76-34 at home. Goliad has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 11 games by 20 points or more this season.
Mathis now has a winning record of 13-12. As for Goliad, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won eight of their last nine games, which provided a nice bump to their 23-4 record this season.
Mathis ended up a good deal behind Goliad in their previous meeting back in February of 2023, losing 41-27. Can Mathis avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
