Polynesian Football Classic: No. 15 Bingham hangs on; No. 23 Chandler rolls behind Conover

Jared Greenfield and Saleka Ataata broke up a fourth-down pass at the goal line in the final minute as 15th-ranked Bingham (South Jordan, Utah) held on to defeat a scrappy Mountain Pointe (Phoenix, Ariz.) squad 21-14 in the fifth and final game of the Polynesian Football Classic presented by MaxPreps at Liberty High in Henderson (Nev.). A Hail Mary 35-yard completion to Ahmen Williams from Nick Wallerstedt on fourth-and 25, put the ball at the Bingham 5-yard line with less 1:45 remaining. But three runs went absolutely no where, and on fourth down, instead of lobbing the ball in the corner to the 6-foot-4 Williams, who earlier caught a 26-yard TD, Mountain Pointe tried to fool Bingham with a slant.

It didn't work. Ataata and Greenfield were both there to deflect the ball away., keeping the Miners (4-0) undefeated.

In the early going it was all about Bingham's Evona Hall, who broke off touchdown runs of 3 and 92 yards to give Bingham a 14-7 halftime lead. The Miners seemed to take complete control on a trick play in the middle of the third when Greenfield, from his running back spot, took a pitch and fired  50-yard TD pass to a wide open Jake Cragun, making it 21-7. A muffed punt, however, led to a 10-yard scoring drive for Mountain Pointe, capped by a 5-yard TD run from Finley Nitura to cut the lead to 21-14 just before the end of the third.

Bingham seemed to take complete control with another long, ball-controlling drive on the ground, but a chip shot field goal clanked off the right upright, giving Mountain View new life. When the Hail Mary to Williams was complete, it looked like overtime was destined. But Greenfield and Ataata came to the rescue.

BYU-bound quarterback Jacob Conover threw five touchdowns  two each going to Gunner Maldanado and DeCarlos Brooks as Chandler raced to leads of 28-0 and 35-7 before letting off the gas. Brayden Liebrock also had TD catch for Chandler. David Heckard recovered a fumble in the end zone for Faith Lutheran, which also got a 64-yard touchdown pass from Isaiah Rodriguez to Peyton Thornton and a 1-yard TD run by Hunter Kaupiko.

A goal-line in the final minute lifted Carson (1-3) to its first win of the season over Farrington, which dropped to 1-4.
