National Highlight Reel: Pennsylvania RB posts 447 yards

Owasso rallies to nip Norman, 51-44, in 5 overtimes; Monroe passes for 501 yards; N.J. QB tosses 7 TDs.

Big numbers arose all over the nation this weekend in football, and small numbers, the record-breaking type, came up in cross country this past week:

* Rashaad Williams ran 28 times for 447 yards and five touchdowns as Central Bucks West (Doylestown, Pa.) defeated Coatesville (Pa.), 42-28. The state record is 488 yards.

* Bastrop (Texas) defeated Corsicana (Texas), 55-34, as Josiah Monroe passed for 501 yards (28 of 41) and had a total offense total of 662 yards and six touchdowns. Mustafa Akbar anchored the defense with three interceptions.

* Owasso (Okla.), which trailed 16-0 at the end of three quarters, rallied to outlast Norman (Okla.), 51-44, in five overtimes as senior wide receiver Joe Lindsey scored five touchdowns. Norman's standout tailback, Donovan Roberts, carried 51 times for 187 yards and four touchdowns.



* Tyree Rucker passed for six touchdowns as Samuel Fels (Philadelphia) nipped Benjamin Franklin (Philadelphia), 48-46. The game was called with 3:21 left due to darkness.

* Undefeated Northwestern (Rock Hill, S.C.) routed James Island (Charleston, S.C.), 45-14, as senior Justin Worley completed 33 of 47 passes for 476 yards and five touchdowns.

* Tanner McEvoy fired seven touchdown passes as Bergen Catholic (Oradell, N.J.) routed Red Bank Catholic (N.J.), 65-34.

* J. J. Jude ran 38 times for 465 yards and five touchdowns as Johnson Central (Paintsville, Ky.) rolled past Covington Catholic (Park Hills, Ky.), 41-28.

* Senior Ty Long, who has committed to the University of South Alabama, kicked a 52-yard field goal as time expired to give Roswell (Ga.) a dramatic 29-27 victory over Parkview (Lilburn, Ga.).

* Unbeaten Jefferson (Tampa, Fla.) defeated Plant City (Fla.), 63-21, to set a state record with 530 regular-season points. Senior Quentin Williams passed for 492 yards and six touchdowns and needs just four more touchdown passes to become Florida's career leader.



* St. Joseph (St. Augustine, Fla.) defeated Mandarin Christian (Jacksonville, Fla.), 36-26, in a game that featured nine onside kicks and both teams running fourth-down plays on every occasion but one.

* Luis Soto carried 67 times for a school-record 469 yards as Saddleback (Santa Ana, Calif.) lost to Laguna Beach (Calif.), 49-39.

* Steve Klonne of Archbishop McNicholas (Cincinnati) and Rich Reichert of St. Anthony's (Melville, N.Y.) both recently notched their 200th coaching victories.

HOCKEY: USA WINS IN SWEDEN
The U.S. National Under-18 hockey team edged Sweden 5-4 in a shootout to win the Four Nations Cup for the second straight year in Sundsvall, Sweden. At one point Sweden held a commanding 4-1 lead.

Robbie Russo (Westmont, Ill.) scored one goal in regulation and the winner during the shootout to spark the Americans. Matt McNeely (Burnsville, Minn.) made 37 saves. Russo and Rocco Grimaldi (Rossmoor, Calif.) paced the champs with six points during their 3-0 tournament run. Their only loss was to Sweden, 3-1, in a pre-tournament game.

BASEBALL: NOTRE DAME INKS BIGGIO
St. Thomas (Houston, Texas) senior second baseman Conor Biggio has signed with the University of Notre Dame, according to the Houston Chronicle. The oldest son of former Houston Astros great Craig Biggio, Conor helped the Eagles win the Class 5A private-school state title last spring.



* The University of Southern California has landed one of the nation's top infielders, Edison (Huntington Beach, Calif.) shortstop Christian Lopes, according to the Los Angeles Times.

CROSS COUNTRY: VENABLES BREAKS RECORD
Highland Regional (Blackwood, N.J.) standout Megan Venables smashed a 27-year-old course record when she won the Group 3 state championship in 17 minutes, 28 seconds.

* Sayre (Lexington, Ky.) eighth grader Maddox Patterson won the Class A state title for the second year in a row, with a record time of 18:25.34. However, Class 2A champ Caterina Karas of Collins (Shelbyville, Ky.) ran 18:11.92 on the same day.

POTPOURRI
* Tevin Bettis exploded for 45 points to spark McGill-Toolen (Mobile, Ala.) to a 92-75 basketball victory over Cottage Hill (Mobile, Ala.) and the championship of the Yellow Jackets Tip-Off Classic. He had 30 points and 12 rebounds during an earlier 62-54 victory over Jackson (Ala.).

* Bolles (Jacksonville, Fla.) won the Class 1A boys state swimming title for a state-record 23rd consecutive year and its girls captured their title for the 20th year in a row, even though they won just one relay.

* Central Catholic (Portland, Ore.) volleyball coach Rick Lorenz posted his 1,000th victory by blanking David Douglas (Portland, Ore.), 3-0. He has won eight state titles.



* Dakota Fanning earned her second straight homecoming queen award at Campbell Hall (North Hollywood, Calif.).
