Baseball Game Preview: Grimsley Whirlies vs. Hoggard Vikings

The Grimsley Whirlies will head out to challenge the Hoggard Vikings at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Grimsley's pitching crew has only allowed 2.1 runs per game this season, so Hoggard's hitters will have their work cut out for them.

Grimsley's pitching crew heads into the matchup hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Wednesday. They put the hurt on Page with a sharp 8-0 win. The Whirlies not only won on Wednesday, but they posted their biggest win since March 21st.

Jacob Benbow tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out 11 over five innings pitched. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than nine strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Max Snyder, who went 2-for-4 with five RBI, one run, and one double. Those five RBI gave him a new career-high. Cullen Adams also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.

Meanwhile, Hoggard was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their seventh straight loss. They might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 3-2 to West Brunswick, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior.

Lucas Mathews was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out six batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits.

The victory made it two in a row for Grimsley and bumps their season record up to 14-4. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 0 runs in those games. As for Hoggard, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-12.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Grimsley has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.4 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Hoggard struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.9 strikeouts.
