Football Recap: Nicholas Matautia's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Righetti over Atascadero

Righetti's last matchup with Atascadero could've gone either way, but unfortunately the same can't be said for the pair's matchup on Friday. The Warriors lost 35-14 to the Greyhounds. The contest was a 7-7 toss-up at halftime, but the Warriors couldn't quite close it out.

Righetti lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Nicholas Matautia, who threw for 174 yards and two touchdowns. A healthy portion of that aerial production (83 yards to be exact) went to Daniel France, who also brought in a receiving touchdown.

Leading Atascadero to victory were Mike Trejo and Damon Mitchell. Trejo rushed for 123 yards and three TDs, while Mitchell rushed for 135 yards and one score on only 13 carries. Trejo's passing game has become a key predictor of the Greyhounds' success: the team is 3-1 when his passer rating is 100 or higher, but only 1-3 otherwise.

Righetti's loss was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 2-6. As for Atascadero, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 4-4.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Righetti will challenge Pioneer Valley at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Warriors will be up against the Panthers' rather soft defense (which has allowed 36 points per game), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. As for Atascadero, they will host Morro Bay at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
