League recap: Havelock extends winning streak with victory over Jacksonville

3A Conference 17 recap October 8, 2013

Havelock added to the longest winning streak in 3A Conference 17 this week by beating Jacksonville, 42-0. The win marks seventh in a row for the the Rams.

The Cardinals fell to Havelock 42-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.

Swansboro's dynamic duo of Chris Phipps and Markuise Hemby proved to be unstoppable against White Oak, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Phipps threw for 96 yards and 1 touchdown and Hemby had 56 yards receiving. Deandre Thompkins helped Swansboro's passing attack out by catching 5 balls for 28 yards.

Shane Hill was a key player and the best on defense this week as the Pirates defeated the Vikings. The 5-foot-11 senior recorded 2 fumbles and grabbed 1 sack.

Jim Bryant's team's Travis Sabdo and Michael Bowman have formed a dream team this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. 6-1 quarterback Sabdo has thrown for 1,092 yards this season, while Bowman has 22 catches for 369 yards. White Oak's Elijah Harris leads the league in rushing yards with 800.

Fans will be treated to a premier battle in the secondary when the Rams' Bowman goes up against Swansboro's Hemby.

Next week's game between Havelock and Tim Laspada's team will feature an aerial matchup as Sabdo tests his arm against Hemby's defensive ability.

The Rams are in first place, while the Pirates are in third place.
