League recap: Carrollton tops Alexander to extend winning streak

AAAA Region 5 recap October 29, 2013

Adding to the longest winning streak in AAAA Region 5 this week, Carrollton beat Alexander 63-21. The victory was the eighth in a row for the team.

Carrollton took down the Cougars 63-21 last week, the largest margin of any game. Wil Garrett threw for 125 yards and 2 touchdowns and ran for 54 yards in the win.

Derrick James provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Columbus fell to Shaw. He completed 14 passes for 186 yards and 1 touchdown and also ran for 48 yards. James' favorite target this week was James Traylor, who caught 4 passes for 60 yards.

Delvin Weems was the most successful running back in the league this week. In 10 carries, he ran for 135 yards as Sandy Creek topped LaGrange. Eric Swinney also contributed to the rushing game with 86 yards on the ground.

Leading the league in both passing and receiving yards, the Patriots' Cole Garvin and Kitt have proven to be a lethal combination. 6-0 quarterback Garvin has thrown for 1,397 yards this season, while Kitt has 37 catches for 650 yards. Mikell Lands-Davis from Alexander leads the league in rushing with 1,462 yards.

The marquee game in AAAA Region 5 this week will be the clash between Sandy Creek and Rayvan Teague's team. Chip Walker's team enters the contest ranked 13th in the state, while the Trojans ranks fourth.

The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when the Patriots take on Carrollton. Sandy Creek has allowed 158 points this season, while the Trojans have given up 75. The Patriots allowed 7 points last week as they beat the Grangers.

There should be lots of points scored when Sandy Creek and Carrollton face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Patriots comes in having scored 354 this season, while the Trojans have scored 403. Sandy Creek scored 42 points last week as it defeated LaGrange.

Carrollton led the league in scoring this week after putting up 63 points on Matt Combs' team. Garrett ran for 54 yards during the win.
