Basketball Recap: Payson Takes a Loss

Payson was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They were dealt an 83-39 defeat at the hands of the Gilbert Christian Knights. While losing is never fun, the Longhorns can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 214th, while the Knights are ranked 67th).

Payson's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jasper Morgan, who posted five points. Omar Fierro-Nava also deserves some recognition as he posted his first block of the season.

Jace Olson was his usual excellent self, going 10 for 20 on his way to 26 points along with six rebounds and three steals for Gilbert Christian. That's the most steals Olson has posted since back in February of 2024. Another player making a difference was Logan Lucero, who went 5 of 8 en route to 12 points in addition to seven assists and four steals.

Payson's defeat dropped their record down to 7-12. As for Gilbert Christian, they pushed their record up to 12-6 with the win, which was their 12th straight at home dating back to last season.

Payson will square off against San Tan Foothills at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Payson is facing San Tan Foothills at the right time seeing as San Tan Foothills is stuck on a four-game losing streak. As for Gilbert Christian, they will challenge ALA - Ironwood at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. One thing working in Gilbert Christian's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last five contests.
