Basketball Recap: Great Mills Takes a Loss

If Great Mills was feeling good fresh off their 55-13 takedown of Patuxent last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Great Mills Hornets fell 52-44 to the Westlake Wolverines on Wednesday. The Hornets were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Wolverines apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in February of 2024.

When it comes to explaining why Great Mills lost, don't look at LAILA MURILLO. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. The dominant performance gave MURILLO a new career-high in points. Samantha Dyson was another key player, putting up eight points.

Even though they lost, Great Mills smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive rebounds in six consecutive matchups.

Westlake found their leader in freshman Alexis Kelly, who posted 15 points along with seven boards and six steals. Kelly also set a new season-high mark in three-point shooting accuracy with 50%. Another player making a difference was Raynna Ratchford, who almost dropped a double-double with nine points and ten rebounds.

Great Mills' loss was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 9-7. As for Westlake, their victory bumped their record up to 5-11.

Great Mills wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 41-33 win against Thomas Stone on the 7th. As for Westlake, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 49-40 victory against La Plata on the 7th.
