Basketball Recap: Ben Clayson's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Spanish Fork over Salem Hills

Spanish Fork was the 71-57 winner over Salem Hills when they last played one another back in January, but their luck changed this time around. The Spanish Fork Dons fell 71-63 to the Salem Hills Skyhawks on Tuesday.

Spanish Fork's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Ben Clayson, who went 7-for-14 to rack up 20 points. Those 20 points gave Clayson a new career-high. Gage Christensen was another key player, almost dropping a double-double with 16 points and nine boards.

Even though they lost, Spanish Fork was working as a unit and finished the game with 16 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Salem Hills got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Jacoby Gustin out in front who went 9-for-13 on his way to 18 points and seven rebounds. Salem Hills is 4-2 when Gustin posts 15 or more points, but 4-10 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Kade Moser, who dropped a double-double with 14 points and 12 boards.

Spanish Fork's defeat dropped their record down to 9-11. As for Salem Hills, their record now sits at 8-12.

Spanish Fork has already played their next game, a 74-47 loss against Springville on the 7th. As for Salem Hills, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 65-57 defeat against Maple Mountain on the 7th.
