Softball Recap: Wilmington Beats Reed-Custer for Their Fifth Straight Victory

Wilmington had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 15.8 runs) and they went ahead and made it five on Tuesday. Everything went their way against the Reed-Custer Comets as they made off with a 16-5 win. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 12-0 last Monday.

Taryn Gilbert made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she pitched five innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off seven hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 2-for-3. She also hit a double, marking her first of the season.

In other batting news, Molly Southall was a standout: she went 1-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Another player making a difference was Tayloe Stefancic, who went 1-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs.

Wilmington pushed their record up to 7-1 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 18.0 runs over those games. As for Reed-Custer, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-3.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Wilmington will welcome Kankakee at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Kays have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 10.13 runs per game on average), something the Wildcats will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Reed-Custer, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Sandwich at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
