Recap: Dunbar Poets vs. Kenwood Bluebirds
The Dunbar Poets came tearing into Wednesday's contest with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 31 points) and they left with even more momentum. They secured a 61-57 W over Kenwood. Given Dunbar's advantage in MaxPreps' Maryland basketball rankings (they are ranked 73rd, while Kenwood is ranked 264th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Kenwood's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Austin Mbuyi, who scored 16 points along with five rebounds. Mbuyi scored a full 28.1% of Kenwood's points, the third time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Andrew Otuyelu, who scored ten points.
Dunbar's victory was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 4-1. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 65.4 points per game. As for Kenwood, they still haven't won a game yet this season and fell to 0-8.
Dunbar will head out on the road to face off against Edmondson-Westside at 5:15 p.m. on January 4, 2024. As for Kenwood, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Milford Mill Academy at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
