Football Recap: Gray Collegiate Academy Piles Up the Points Against Brookland-Cayce

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Gray Collegiate Academy). They breezed past the Brookland-Cayce Bearcats to the tune of 56-0 on Friday. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the team's high-flying offense, the game also marked the team's biggest victory of the season.

Gray Collegiate Academy found their leader in freshman Xavier Wright, who rushed for 90 yards and two TDs on only five carries, and also threw for 135 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only nine passes. Corey Gleaton got in on the action too, returning a kick for a touchdown.

One reason for the win was Gray Collegiate Academy's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Michael Boulware, Kaleb Holmes, and Dawson Peek, who each picked up one sack apiece. Gray Collegiate Academy received some extra help from Jack Armstrong, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.

Special teams was a major factor in the game for Gray Collegiate Academy, racking up 12 points in total. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Gleaton, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.

Gray Collegiate Academy pushed their record up to 4-2 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to yards per carry: they averaged an imposing 7.3 yards per carry in those games compared to only 1.63 in the others. As for Brookland-Cayce, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 1-5.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Gray Collegiate Academy will venture away from home to square off against Airport at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The Eagles will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more points each contest than the last. As for Brookland-Cayce, they are taking a road trip to take on Aiken at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Bearcats will be up against the Fighting Green Hornets' rather soft defense (which has allowed 27.33 points per matchup), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
