Baseball Recap: Downey's Losing Streak Snapped at Three Games

Downey lost a heartbreaker the last time they played Warren, but it's fair to say they got their revenge given the result of Friday's match. The Vikings' pitcher stepped up to hand the Bears a 9-0 shutout on Friday. This was a revenge game for the Vikings: when they faced off against the Bears on Wednesday, they had to take a 2-0 loss.

Not much got past Ozzy De La Cruz, who gave up just two hits to keep Warren off the board. De La Cruz also tossed a walk, which is notable because Downey is 10-4 when he allows at most two walks, but 4-9 otherwise.

At the plate, Gino Castelo was incredible, going 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March of 2024. Roel Mercedes was another key player, going 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Downey kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post 11 or more hits.

Downey moved to 14-13 with that win, which also ended their three-game losing streak. As for Warren, their defeat dropped their record down to 15-11.

Looking ahead, Downey will take on Glendora at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Tartans' pitching crew has only allowed 3.4 runs per game this season, so the Vikings' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Warren, they will face off against California at 3:15 p.m. on Monday. The Condors will roll in looking for their fourth straight victory, something the Bears surely won't give up without a fight.
