Football Recap: Malik Holman Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Mount Dora

South Lake lost to Mount Dora back in September of 2024, but they didn't allow them the same satisfaction on Friday. The Eagles walked away with a 19-10 win over the Hurricanes. Those 19 points were actually the fewest the Eagles have put up all season, but given the result they're probably not too concerned.

South Lake's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Malik Holman, who rushed for 153 yards and two scores while picking up 7.3 yards per carry. With that strong performance, Holman is now averaging an impressive 103.2 rushing yards per game. Another passer making a difference was Tre Kelly, who threw for 214 yards and one touchdown.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: South Lake was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 217 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've managed all season.

South Lake didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Julian White and Ahvioume Scott. South Lake got some further help from Chase Coello: he picked up a sack and made 14 total tackles (2.0 for loss).

The win made it two in a row for South Lake and bumps their season record up to 4-1. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 40.0 points over those games. As for Mount Dora, they are on a six-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-4.

Looking ahead, South Lake will venture away from home to take on Forest at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few points on average (the Eagles 13, the Wildcats 13.5) so any points scored will be well earned. As for Mount Dora, they will host Lake Highland Prep at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
