Basketball Recap: Jayden Webb's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Las Plumas over Corning

Las Plumas entered their contest against Corning on Friday without any home losses, but there's a first time for everything. The Las Plumas Thunderbirds fell to the Corning Cardinals 67-61. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Thunderbirds came into the match with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 310th, while the Cardinals are ranked 726th).

Las Plumas lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Jayden Webb, who went 7 of 13 on his way to 19 points and five rebounds. T.J. Thompson was another key player, putting up 17 points and five boards.

Corning got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Brody Martinovich out in front who went 6 for 12 en route to 17 points and eight rebounds. Those eight boards gave Martinovich a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Jeff Mendros, who posted 20 points in addition to seven assists and five rebounds.

Las Plumas' defeat was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 3-1 and their overall record down to 16-6. As for Corning, the win got them back to even at 10-10.

Las Plumas will square off against Orland at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Las Plumas is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 60.2 points per game this season. As for Corning, a feisty cat fight is on tap when the Corning Cardinals challenge the Live Oak Lions at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Corning is facing Live Oak at the right time seeing as Live Oak is stuck on a five-game losing streak.
