Softball Recap: Ponaganset Puts Losing Streak Behind Them

Ponaganset had to endure a six-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They put the hurt on the North Kingstown Skippers with a sharp 8-2 win on Thursday.

Mattea Mello spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on seven hits and racked up 13 Ks. She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in six consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Maia Salvo, who fired off two home runs, three runs, and four RBI while going 3-for-3. That's the most runs she has posted since back in May of 2024. Jillian Baris was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two runs.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Ponaganset kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in five consecutive matchups.

Ponaganset's victory bumped their record up to 3-8. As for North Kingstown, they have been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-6 record this season.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Ponaganset will host Portsmouth at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Chieftains' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Patriots have averaged an impressive 9.3 runs per game this season. As for North Kingstown, they will welcome East Providence at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
