MaxPreps Top 25 national high school volleyball rankings

Redondo Union remains at No. 1 after thrilling, come-from-behind five-set win over Mater Dei.

The event lived up to the hype — No. 1 vs. No. 2.

Redondo Union (Redondo Beach, Calif.) showed — for now, at least — why it's No. 1 in the MaxPreps Top 25 national high school volleyball rankings after beating No. 2 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) in a SoCal showdown on Thursday that packed the drama and pressure into stellar five-set match. And if the action was heated, the gym was as well as the air conditioning was out at the Redondo gym.

The Sea Hawks fought back from down 0-2 to win the next three sets, and did so facing match points several times in a 24-26, 22-25, 29-27, 25-20, 15-8 victory.

Redondo Union holds on to No. 1 rank after winning five-set thriller over Mater Dei.

What made the comeback more remarkable is Redondo Union was without star libero Kami Miner, who is competing in Egypt along with a handful of other elite high school players on the U17 U.S. National team.

Being without Minor forced Nalani Iosia, a University of Texas commit, to slide over to the libero role where her leadership allowed freshman Mele Corral-Blagojevich to blossom in front of the home crowd with 17 kills.

Mater Dei and Redondo Union look to meet again in the CIF playoffs and we're eagerly looking forward to that.

Speaking of the Monarchs, who drop from No. 2 to No. 3, the road doesn't get easier as they travel to Kentucky to face the team that slid into the two-spot Assumption, the reigning MaxPreps National Champion.

Three teams enter this week's rankings, including Cedar Falls (Iowa), Xavier College Prep (Phoenix) and Mercy (Farmington Hills, Mich.).
