Basketball Recap: Maria Lyde's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Greeneville over Cocke County

Greeneville easily dispatched Volunteer last Tuesday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Greeneville Greene Devils fell just short of the Cocke County Fighting Cocks by a score of 55-52 on Friday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Greene Devils have suffered against the Fighting Cocks since January 14, 2019.

Greeneville lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Maria Lyde, who went 5-for-12 to rack up 13 points along with eight rebounds and five assists. She is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in each of the last four games she's played. Kyla Jobe was another key player, going 8-for-18 en route to 20 points.

Cocke County got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Blakelyn Clevenger out in front who went 6-for-10 on her way to 16 points. Another player making a difference was Ava Wheeler, who posted 11 points.

Greeneville's record is now 17-10. As for Cocke County, they are on a roll lately: they've won 14 of their last 15 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 24-6 record this season.

Greeneville has already played their next matchup, a 67-59 victory against West Ridge on the 17th. As for Cocke County, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 60-35 win against Fulton on the 22nd.
