Basketball Recap: Elgin/Pope John Piles Up the Points Against Boyd County

You're bound to get a positive result if you outscore your opponent every quarter, and that's exactly how it played out for Elgin/Pope John on Saturday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that they blew the Boyd County Spartans out of the water with a 61-20 final score. The Wolfpack have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won three matchups by 34 points or more this season.

Elgin/Pope John got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Braelyn Martinsen out in front who posted 11 points. Kate Furstenau was another key player, putting up 11 points.

Despite the loss, Boyd County saw an underclassman step up: freshman Elly Zeisler had six points.

Elgin/Pope John's win bumped their record up to 6-1. As for Boyd County, they are on an eight-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-7.

Elgin/Pope John wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 49-33 victory against Lyons-Decatur Northeast on the 27th. After both having extra time off, Boyd County and Bloomfield will shake off the cobwebs and challenge one another at 2:00 p.m. on January 2, 2025. Bloomfield has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
